Magic JohnsonBroome’s Michael Johnson has won the ninth annual running of the Mid West Modified Magic at Geraldton Speedway on Saturday February 6th. Johnson who started in position eight in the twenty lap race won the event on lap nineteen when he passed Albany’s Ayden Trewern who had led every lap since the start. Johnson used the outside line to advantage in the early stages of the race, making most of his passes up high. Matt Kata (Albany) and Kim Jolly (Carnarvon) both drove hard clean races to finish third and fourth respectively. The race took three attempts to start when the field was unable to negotiate turn one which resulted in both defending ‘Magician’ John Purser and Broome’s Ray Clifton damaging their cars and withdrawing from the race. Trewern led from the start and established a handy break but the race which saw several caution flags for spinning cars continually brought him back to the field. The final caution which was thrown on lap eighteen for Jason Pearce whose diff let go. It set up a two lap dash for the chequered and Trewern went wide in turn one and let Johnson through. It was his only mistake for the entire race. After the event Johnson said he would have been happy with second and didn’t think he’d get past Trewern. Eighteen cars were in Geraldton for the nine heats and final, but before the heats were run both Albany’s Sean Theyer and Denham’s Wayne Allan were out with major engine problems. Trewern and Jolly both won two heats to set up their front row starting positions in the Magic Feature. Other heat wins went to Brendan Selleck, Paul Briggs, Ben Strautins, Matt Kata and John Purser.
